Small Bathroom, Large Appearance

1. Color has a major influence on how the human eye sees space. Dark colors are more imposing and limiting. Neutral or lighter colors are more reflective, providing the illusion of space. A simple paint job might be all that's required to make your small bathroom look and feel larger.

2. Mirrors are often used in interior decorating to expand a room. Consider replacing your current bathroom mirror with a longer, more horizontal mirror.

3. Stripes worn on clothes typically make people look taller or wider. The same can be true of decorating. Using straight lines in your bathroom decorations will lure your eyes into traveling through the bathroom rather than settling on particular spots.

4. Bathroom light fixtures are typically long and rectangular and positioned above the mirror. Replace your bathroom light with recessed ceiling lights and you'll be surprised at how open and roomy your small bathroom feels.

5. In small bathrooms, too many bathroom accessories can overwhelm the eye. Cut bathroom accessories to a minimum, and use modern or geometric wall art that gives a sense of diffuse space.

6. If your small bathroom has opaque shower doors, replace these with clear glass. Transparent shower curtains are a similar alternative.

7. Open the doors of perception by replacing your hinged door with a sliding door or pocket door. In a small bathroom, an inward-opening door can take up much of the available space.

8. Recessed wall storage or medicine cabinets will prevent mirrors from jutting out into the bathroom.

9. If your family is expanding but your bathroom size is still the same, add a vanity and sink elsewhere in the house as a secondary grooming area.

10. If a small bathroom area was simply designed poorly, you might consider a bathroom renovation that arranges your shower, sink, or toilet in a more ergonomic fashion.
