Choosing the right shower curtain involves finding the best blend of function and design. Your shower curtain's size and material should be determined by your bathroom's available space and frequency of use. Just as importantly, a shower curtain will define and limit the color palette for your entire bathroom.

Setting a tone

With so many shower curtains from which to choose, deciding on a design scheme for your bathroom should be the first order of business. Shower curtain styles are generally divided into novelties, themes, and patterns. Novelties and themes might include Star Wars, Renaissance angels, rustic hunting scenes, or poker playing cards, while shower curtain patterns run the gamut from modern to vintage to traditional.

Themed shower curtains can be fun, but remember that you'll likely have to decorate the entire bathroom in a similar fashion. What looks quirky on a shower curtain can become kitschy when applied to an entire room.

With shower curtain patterns, look at both colors and designs. Earth tones with a checkerboard style will be warm and familial, while ice blue squares or black and white stripes will set a more modern tone for the bathroom.

Shower curtain materials

Another important design consideration when choosing shower curtains is the material.

Vinyl and plastic shower curtains will be inexpensive and functional but aren't going to do a whole lot for a bathroom's ambience. Polyester is used with many shower curtain styles and is a cost-efficient yet visually appealing choice.

Fabric shower curtains are more expensive but can be very elegant or chic. Duck cloth (sometimes known as cotton duck) is a durable medium-weight cloth that will instantly heighten the charm of your bathroom.

A shower curtain liner will also be necessary. Even fabric shower curtain liners are inexpensive, and that extra barrier will greatly prolong the life of your shower curtains.
