Shower Curtain Care Instructions

Gingham Yellow Shower Curtain

Gallons of water may splash over them every day, but it's still necessary to keep your shower curtains clean. Mold, mildew, and soap scum will build up over time, dirtying the bathroom and even ruining shower curtains if action isn't taken. To prevent that happening, we've provided some easy do-it-yourself shower curtain care instructions.

Prevention

The first step in shower curtain care is installing a shower curtain liner if you haven't done so already. Shower curtain liners provide an inexpensive barrier that will protect your shower curtains and prolong their useful life.

Many different spray-on shower care products are now available to proactively combat mold and mildew formation on your shower curtain and shower curtain liner. Using these inexpensive sprays daily after you've bathed should drastically reduce the need for washing your shower curtains and liner.

Washing

Even with preventative measures, you will need to wash your shower curtain from time to time. Fabric and vinyl shower curtains can be machine-washed in warm water. Cheaper shower curtains made from lightweight plastic should instead be hand-washed or soaked in the bathtub.

Various washing materials can be used for cleaning a shower curtain. Detergent, bleach, vinegar, baking soda and fabric softener can all be used to clean your shower curtains and shower curtain liner. We recommend bleach use only as necessary.

Another preventive measure you can take after washing your shower curtains is soaking them in a saltwater solution. This will prevent mold and mildew. If you notice that crystals have formed on your shower curtains, it's because too much salt was mixed in.

Drying

Do not dry your shower curtains in a drying machine. The concentrated heat could melt or damage them. Hanging your shower curtains and shower curtain liner in place and letting them drip dry is all that's necessary. Never iron or dry clean shower curtains.
